Engineering and summer fun go hand in hand when you take it to the sidewalk with the Gears! Gears! Gears! building sets. Beat the heat by creating a sidewalk-sized car wash, then sending your favorite Learning Resources Gears! Gears! Gears! rolling vehicles through to get that summer shine!
Building the Cars
We start with the Gears! Gears! Gears! Rover, Cycle, and Motorized On The Move building sets.
Opening the boxes and emptying their contents on to our picnic table was just the beginning of the fun.
The open-ended building of the Gears! play sets make for endless creativity and challenges. The Rover set is our first to tackle, but things begin clicking right away.
Critical thinking skills are put to the test as we try to assemble the motorcycle. After all, motorcycles need a wash, too!
Next, the On The Move Building Set. This set takes Gears! to the next level with the ability to build a race car, airplane, or motorcycle – and it doesn’t stop there!
Decorating the Car Wash
Once our vehicles are put together, our next step is assembling our car wash. A quick trip to the Dollar Store gives us just the supplies we need to make a totally radical wash to position on the sidewalk – pool noodles and a plastic grass skirt!
A little glue and glitter make for perfect signage to welcome our car wash guests.
The pool noodles were a bit long, so we trimmed them up to fit on the sidewalk. Easy to do with kitchen scissors!
With a dry sidewalk and some heavy duct tape, we positioned the pool noodles in an arc for our vehicles to drive through.
We created another arc behind it, deciding to do three arcs total for our project.
Now, for the water element. The old sprinkler in the garage should do the trick!
The car wash is set up and ready to go. But before we get the water going, we send our motorized On the Move race car through for a trial run.
Success! Now bring on the water to send our other Gears! Gears! Gears! vehicles through.
Time to run through the wash! The line is long today!
Turn on the water and send your vehicles through. Our day was hot and humid so the water felt great.
The Motorcycle is the last to go through the car wash. So much fun to race through the end!
Enjoy a summer of engineering fun!
Save it for later!
